Coca-Cola por Atras is a rueda de casino figure built from the Cuban Coca-Cola turn, a travelling three-step left turn for the follower, with the distinguishing feature that the leader gives the guidance from behind the follower or around the leader's back rather than from a normal open-facing lead.[1] The figure belongs to casino vocabulary rather than linear slot salsa; it keeps the partners walking through the circular rueda pathway while preserving the usual salsa two-measure pulse of one break per measure.[2] Mechanically, the first half establishes the behind-the-back lead and keeps both partners grounded in basic timing; the second half sends the follower through a staged left rotation, commonly divided across three walking steps rather than snapped at the end. Local calls often place it after figures such as Dile Que No con Coca-Cola or Panque con Coca-Cola, so the caller's phrase determines the exact entry.[1] Rueda de Casino itself is Cuban in origin, associated with Havana casino clubs in the late 1950s, and its figure names vary by region and teaching lineage.[3] Some Cuban teaching material also identifies this figure as Enroscala.[4]
How it's danced
Lead and follow cues
CountCasino/rueda phrasing on 1-2-3, 5-6-7: one break per measure, normally on 1 and 5 in the common a-tiempo count. The setup occupies 1-2-3; the Coca-Cola por Atras turn travels and rotates on 5-6-7. In contratiempo teaching, the same stepping relationship is shifted to the local 2-3-4, 6-7-8 feel rather than mixed with an On1 cue.
Lead
On 1-2-3, maintain casino walking rhythm, break once in the measure, and arrange the connection so the guiding hand or body line passes behind the follower without pulling her off balance. On 5, invite the follower's left turn from behind; on 6, continue the lead as she passes through the middle of the rotation; on 7, release or settle the connection so she finishes facing the leader or the rueda pathway. The rotation should be budgeted across the three walking steps, commonly about one third turn per step for an approximately full left turn, adjusted to the local entry.
Follow
On 1-2-3, keep the casino basic timing and respond to the behind-the-body setup without beginning the turn early; when facing the leader, the follower breaks back on her right as the leader breaks back on his left. On 5-6-7, walk the Coca-Cola left turn through the lead: begin the counter-clockwise rotation on 5, continue through the travelling middle on 6, and complete the final portion on 7 so the body reorients without a late whip.
Song timingBest at moderate rueda social tempos where walking turns remain clear, roughly 150-185 bpm. Around 190 bpm and above, the behind-the-body lead and staged follower rotation require smaller steps and cleaner release; it should not be taught as comfortably fast unless the group already controls Coca-Cola timing.

Watch out
Common mistakes
- Starting the follower's left turn during the 1-2-3 setup instead of preparing it there and turning on 5-6-7.
- Using a slot-salsa cross-body pathway rather than casino's circular walking pathway.
- Pulling from behind the follower's shoulder or arm, which makes the turn late or off-axis.
- Treating the Coca-Cola as one terminal spin instead of dividing the left rotation across the three walking steps.
- Confusing the follower's Coca-Cola left turn with an outside or clockwise turn.
Don't confuse with
Easily confused moves
- Coca-Cola without por Atras: the same family of follower left turn, but not necessarily led from behind.
- Dile Que No con Coca-Cola: a related entry phrase, not automatically the same figure unless the behind-the-back lead is included.
- Cross-body lead inside turn: a linear salsa slot figure with different spatial grammar.
- Enchufla: a Cuban partner exchange action that may precede or follow the figure but is not this turn.
