El Pozo is a rueda de casino call rather than an independent dance style; it belongs to the shared vocabulary of couples moving in a circle under a caller’s direction.[1] In the commonly described form, the couple keeps a compact closed position while the leader redirects the follower first toward the leader’s right side and then back toward the leader’s left, stopping with the partnership oriented roughly parallel to the circle’s center line.[2] Another attested description gives the figure a center-and-out accent: dancers incline toward the middle of the rueda on count 1 with a right-foot tap, then incline away from the middle on count 5 with a left-foot tap.[3] Its timing therefore fits the two-measure casino/rueda phrase, with one break or accent in each measure rather than repeated breaks inside a single measure. Because rueda figures are executed in unison by multiple couples responding to a named call, El Pozo’s identity is tied less to solo styling than to collective timing, spacing, and the preservation of the circular formation.[1]
How it's danced
Lead and follow cues
CountCasino/rueda a tiempo phrasing: 1-2-3, pause/hold on 4; 5-6-7, pause/hold on 8. The figure has one primary accent or break per measure, commonly toward the rueda center on 1 and away from it on 5.
Lead
Casino/rueda timing: on 1-2-3, keep a compact closed frame, redirect the follower toward the leader's right side while shaping the partnership slightly toward the rueda center; on 5-6-7, return the follower toward the leader's left and settle parallel to the center without opening into a linear slot.
Follow
Casino/rueda timing: on 1-2-3, maintain the closed frame and allow the leader's right-side redirection while keeping steps small and grounded; on 5-6-7, travel back toward the leader's left-side redirection and finish parallel to the center with the partnership compact.
Song timingBest suited to moderate casino/rueda social tempos around 150-185 bpm; above roughly 190 bpm, the closed-position redirection should remain compact to avoid disrupting the circle.
Learn first
Prerequisites
- basic casino timing.
- closed-position frame.
- rueda circle spacing.
- response to called figures.
Watch out
Common mistakes
- Opening the figure into a New York or Los Angeles slot instead of preserving the rueda circle relationship.
- Letting the follower drift too far from closed position during the right-left redirection.
- Adding extra breaks inside each measure rather than keeping the two-measure 1-2-3 / 5-6-7 structure.
- Finishing at an angle that blocks the next called rueda figure instead of returning to a compact parallel orientation.
Don't confuse with
Easily confused moves
- Cross-body lead: El Pozo may borrow a right-left redirection, but it is not a linear slot exchange.
- Dile que no: both involve casino redirection, but El Pozo is a distinct called rueda figure.
- Pozo as a literal 'well': the name should not be expanded into invented regional translations.
