La Foto is a rueda de casino call in which each couple briefly arrests the circulating partner pattern to make a picture-like pose before returning to the rueda flow. Rueda is danced by couples arranged in a circle, with a caller naming figures that the couples execute together[1]; La Foto belongs to that call-and-response vocabulary rather than to the fixed slot grammar of New York or Los Angeles salsa. In a conservative base version, the leader opens the couple from guapea, redirects the follower beside or slightly in front of him, and shapes a short still point; the follower keeps her own break action, then allows the lead to place and release the frame without adding an independent spin. The figure is normally phrased across one salsa two-measure unit, with one break in each measure and the pose resolving in time for the next call. Rueda de casino developed in Havana social-club settings and later spread through Miami and other international scenes[2], so La Foto may appear under the same Spanish call in Cuban-leaning and Miami-influenced rueda groups, while non-rueda salsa scenes usually do not treat it as a standard partner-dance figure.
How it's danced
Lead and follow cues
CountCasino/Rueda On1 phrasing: 1-2-3, 5-6-7. There is one break per measure, on 1 and 5. The first measure prepares and opens the couple; the second measure places and releases the pose.
Lead
From guapea, maintain the leader's own break action on 1 and 5. On 1-2-3, open the frame and prepare the follower without pulling her across the circle. On 5-6-7, place the couple into a compact picture shape beside or slightly offset from each other, using a small staged reorientation rather than a spin: approximately a quarter turn into the pose, then a quarter turn or less to square the frame for release. Resume guapea or the caller's next figure on the following 1.
Follow
From guapea, keep the follower's own break action on 1 and 5, mirroring the leader on the opposite foot. On 1-2-3, respond to the opened frame without initiating a forward slot walk. On 5-6-7, allow the lead to settle the body into the picture shape beside or slightly in front of the leader, with any reorientation split into small stages rather than a single turn. Exit on the following 1 into guapea or the next called figure.
Song timingBest at moderate social rueda tempos, roughly 150-185 bpm. At 190 bpm and above, the pose must be very compact so the couple can release cleanly into the next called figure.

Prerequisites
- guapea.
- open hold.
- basic rueda caller response.
- controlled stop-and-release timing.
Watch out
Common mistakes
- Treating the call as a free spin instead of a short posed check.
- Breaking on opposite directions rather than opposite feet, which collapses the mirror action.
- Holding the pose past the next count 1 and missing the following rueda call.
- Using a slot-based cross-body pathway; La Foto is a rueda pose figure, not a linear salsa travelling figure.
- Over-rotating the follower into a full turn when the base figure only needs a small staged reorientation into and out of the picture shape.
Don't confuse with
Easily confused moves
- foto as a literal photographic pose outside rueda, which may not imply this called figure.
- cross-body lead, which exchanges slot ends and does not describe this rueda call.
- paso cruzado or cruzado, which refer to crossed footwork and are not name variants for this figure.
