Beso is a Cuban salsa and Rueda de Casino call whose name means “kiss,” and the figure is identified by a stylized kiss gesture rather than by a large travelling exchange.[1] In the common description, the leader uses an alarde: an arm flourish lifted over the follower’s head, then shaped so the leader appears to kiss the follower’s hand or fingertips while the partnership keeps the basic casino pulse.[1] Its timing is normally taught in an On1 casino frame, with one break in each measure: leader back-left and follower back-right on 1, then the complementary break on 5, while the decorative arm action is placed over the walking counts rather than replacing the weight changes. The figure is not a New York or Los Angeles slot pattern; it belongs most clearly to Cuban social vocabulary and rueda calling, where a visible hand sign can cue the “kiss” idea to the circle.[2] Sources also attest diminutive and command-name forms such as Besito and Besala, while Besito Largo and Beso Complicado are best treated as elaborations rather than the base figure.[1]

How it's danced

Lead and follow cues

CountOn1 casino/Rueda phrasing: one break per measure, leader on left and follower on right at 1, then the complementary break at 5. A compact base version fits one two-measure phrase: 1-2-3 prepares from open/facing position; 5-6-7 carries the alarde and kiss gesture; 8 is held or settled. On2 versions should shift the breaks to 2 and 6 only if the whole rueda is dancing contratiempo.

Lead

On1 casino frame: on 1-2-3, break back on the left, replace, and prepare the connected hand without pulling the follower off her own break; on 5-6-7, keep the follower’s hand path clear, lift into an alarde over her head, and finish the kiss gesture while returning to a stable open or facing hold. Any leader rotation is small and staged: open the torso only as needed during 5-6, then square back by 7.

Follow

On1 casino frame: on 1-2-3, break back on the right, replace, and keep the connected arm toned but available; on 5-6-7, continue the walking basic while allowing the lifted hand to pass into the alarde shape, then re-face the leader in a balanced position on 7. The follower does not start with a count-1 forward travel; the first action is her own back break.

Song timingBest at moderate social salsa tempos, roughly 150-185 bpm, where the arm flourish can be completed without rushing; 190 bpm and above is the fast end and favors a smaller gesture. The count description is On1; contratiempo/On2 use requires shifting the whole figure so the breaks occur on 2 and 6.

Learn first

Prerequisites

  • Casino basic/guapea timing.
  • Open-hold connection.
  • Alarde arm pathway.
  • Rueda call-and-response awareness.

Watch out

Common mistakes

  • Beginning the follower with a forward count-1 action instead of her own back break.
  • Treating the kiss gesture as a pause that stops the feet, which breaks the two-measure salsa pulse.
  • Pulling the follower’s arm across the face or behind the shoulder rather than giving a lifted, clear alarde pathway.
  • Over-rotating the partnership into a slot exchange; the base Beso is a compact casino flourish, not a cross-body lead.
  • Using the same foot for both roles in verbal teaching instead of mirror feet: leader left on 1, follower right on 1.

Don't confuse with

Easily confused moves

  • Cross-body lead: a slot exchange of ends, not the compact rueda kiss flourish.
  • Inside turn: a follower’s left/counter-clockwise turn; Beso may contain an alarde but is not defined by an inside turn.
  • Outside turn: a follower’s right/clockwise turn; it is not the same name or action as Beso.
  • Beso in song lyrics: the Spanish word may appear lyrically without referring to the dance figure.
