Casino (sometimes called "Cuban Salsa") is a dance that began forming in the 50s/60s as both musicians and dancers in Cuba began experimenting with new sounds as well as dance moves! Swing and other American genres starting influencing the development of the dance and music. This is when we start to see the addition of turn patterns to the traditionally closed position Son. The way Son was danced had already began to shift thanks to mixes between it and Chachachá. The addition of swing really pushed the formation of what we know as Casino, as well as the timing focus from "contratiempo" (salsa friends call this"Power2") to "a tiempo" (salsa friends call this on1). A large amount of popular Cuban dances of the time used contratiempo so this is a huge shift! One of Casino's major differences with salsa is that rather being danced in line, or in two "slots," it is considered to be circular with a varying amount of "slots." There are many more differences, watch the video and see what you

Guaguanco with our team! This dance is the story of a man chasing a women who just won't give in! Think of a rooster strutting his feathers for a hen! We've seen its steps in our favorite body movement classes and Salsa styling workshops! Rumba was born in Havana and Matanzas as a mixture of both music and dance cultures from Spain, Nigeria, Congo, and other African regions to form a uniquely Cuban dance and music form. The base of Rumba is clave, which forms an asymmetric metronome (woah!) that guides the musicians and locks in the rhythm. There is too much to say, just enjoy the video! Elegua is the opener and closer of paths. He allows good and bad to come into the lives of people as he is a balance of the two (his more mischievous side being known as Eshú). He opens the path for the Orisha and their blessings to enter the lives of people in the saunter community. You'll hear the following reference to him in popular cuban music and salsa: "aso kere kere meye," or "alaroye" Like the video, page and share! One of the oldest rumba styles and born in Matanzas, Rumba Columbia, is traditionally a display of prowess, agility, masculinity, and elegance where the male dancer battles the drum while showing off his individual style. As times change there are also amazing female columbieras. Columbia's moves are often adapted for Salsa footwork, so you may recognize some of these steps, salseros!
