Bachata Sensual: Improver Class Plan
75-minute ready-to-run class plan
Bachata Sensual2 min read
Objective
By the end of class, students can lead and follow a compact bachata sensual phrase with a controlled body wave option, clear exits, musical timing, and explicit consent around close hold, head movement, and dips.
Duration
75
Warm-up
8 min: Solo bachata basic in place and traveling, then gentle mobility for ankles, knees, hips, ribs, shoulders, and spine. The teacher keeps range small and cues neutral posture, soft knees, and breathing before any wave action.
Lesson blocks
- 10 min: Timing and grounded base. Review bachata basic timing, weight transfer, tap control, and small torso isolation so dancers have a stable platform before adding sensual vocabulary.
- 12 min: Solo wave mechanics. Drill rib-to-hip and hip-to-rib pathways, keeping the neck neutral and the knees responsive; catch the count before stepping, then release the movement without collapsing the chest.
- 14 min: Partner connection and consent frame. In closed or close-open position, leads practice offering direction through the frame while follows maintain their own axis; either partner may choose more space, and head or neck movement is not led by force.
- 16 min: Main phrase. Teach a short sequence: basic entry, close-position preparation, controlled body wave option over one measure, reset into basic timing, and a simple turn or traveling exit. Rotate partners often and keep the base version upright.
- 12 min: Musical and mixed-level layering. Run the same phrase to slower and medium bachata tracks; newer improvers keep compact timing, while stronger dancers add delayed texture or a small consenting cambré only when balance is stable.
Cool-down & social
13 min: Cool down with slow basics and shoulder-spine release, then run social practice in rotating pairs where dancers may accept, decline, simplify, or request more space without explanation.
Materials
- Clear floor with enough room for rotating pairs
- Two or three slow-to-medium bachata tracks with steady phrasing
- Optional speaker or metronome app for timing drills
- Water access and a visible no-forced-neck-or-dip safety reminder
Full write-up
This improver class develops bachata sensual movement through a controlled progression from solo body mechanics into partnered communication and short social combinations. The objective is not to add more shapes, but to make common sensual vocabulary safer, clearer, and more musical for dancers who already know bachata basic timing, partner rotation, and simple turns. The class begins with a warm-up that mobilizes the spine, ribs, hips, knees, and ankles without forcing range. It then isolates wave mechanics before connecting them to lead-follow information, because sensual bachata depends on shared timing, grounded weight transfer, and clear invitation rather than pushing or pulling a partner through a shape. The middle of the class teaches a small phrase using closed or close-open connection, a body wave option, and a simple directional exit. This keeps cognitive load appropriate for improvers while leaving enough repetition for partner changes and musical adaptation. Safety and consent are treated as non-negotiable content: the lead proposes direction and timing through the frame, the follow maintains personal axis and chooses head and neck movement, and no partner is required to accept a close hold, dip, head action, or dance invitation. Scene courtesies such as thanking a partner may vary, but bodily consent does not. In a mixed-level room, newer improvers keep the phrase upright and compact, while stronger dancers may add delayed timing, texture, or a controlled cambré only when both partners are stable and consenting. The class closes with low-pressure social practice so students can repeat the material with different bodies and songs rather than treating the pattern as fixed choreography.
