Sequence

  • Basic Movement in closed hold - SQQ/SQQ; lead starts side-left, back-rock, replace, then side-right, forward-rock, replace while the follow mirrors.
  • Open Break from closed to left-to-right handhold - SQQ; keep lead's left to follow's right, release the free side, rock away on the first quick, replace on the second quick.
  • Underarm Turn to Right - SQQ; from lead's left to follow's right, the lead raises that hand on the slow, keeps a compact forward-rock action, and lets the follow turn right to face again.
  • Crossover Breaks, left then right - SQQ/SQQ; use light two-hand or single-hand connection, open side on each slow, cross-rock on the first quick, replace on the second quick.
  • Open Break in single-hand hold - SQQ; lead's left to follow's right stays connected, both rock away and replace to reset distance.
  • Basic Movement back to closed hold - SQQ/SQQ; collect the frame on the side-right half and continue one closed basic to end squared to partner.

Music to try

Choose a moderate bolero with a clear romantic pulse, enough space in the slow count, and no tempo pressure that rushes the quick rocks.

Teaching notes

  • Count the slow across two beats before taking the quick rocks.
  • Keep the joined hand slightly in front of the follow's center during the underarm turn.
  • Use small side steps so the crossover breaks can return to facing position.
  • Close the frame without pulling the follow's shoulder or head line.

Common mistakes

  • Rushing the slow count and arriving early for the quick rock.
  • Letting the underarm hand drift behind the follow's head or shoulder.
  • Over-rotating the crossover breaks so partners no longer face each other on the replace.
  • Adding a dip or close-contact shape without clear consent.

Full write-up

This beginner social bolero routine links the Basic Movement, an Open Break, an Underarm Turn to Right, Crossover Breaks, and a return to Basic Movement. It suits dancers who already understand bolero's slow-quick-quick timing and can maintain a compact closed or open frame, but it does not require advanced turns, dips, or performance styling. The routine begins in closed hold with a full Basic Movement, using the slow side step to show weight transfer and the quick rock-replace to settle the partnership. From the next slow, the lead keeps the left-to-right hand connection and opens the frame for an Open Break; both partners rock away on the quick and replace without dropping tone. That replace gives the follow a clear axis for the right underarm turn on the following measure, while the lead stays small and grounded instead of circling the follow. After the turn, Crossover Breaks allow the pair to open alternately left and right without changing the basic rhythm. Each cross-rock should return to facing position on the replace so the next side step is available. The final Open Break reduces travel and prepares the partnership to collect into closed hold for another Basic Movement. Musically, the combo works best when the slow step is allowed to breathe and the quicks remain calm rather than clipped. Any added dip, forced sway, or unusually close body shape is outside the routine and requires clear consent; the social version keeps the follow's neck, shoulder line, and axis free.
