Sequence

  • Counts 1-8: Open basic in two-hand hold; finish with the lead's left hand connected to the follow's right and the lead's right hand connected to the follow's left.
  • Counts 1-8: Follower right turn to hammerlock; lead the turn under the lead's left hand, keep the second hand low, and finish with the follow wrapped comfortably on the lead's right side.
  • Counts 1-8: Hammerlock unwind to shadow position; release pressure on the wrapped arm, rotate the follow out, and collect both partners facing the same line of dance.
  • Counts 1-8: Shadow basic with restrained body wave; maintain shared timing while the lead invites the wave through frame and the follow keeps independent axis.
  • Counts 1-8: Shadow exit to open position with follower left turn; lift only the needed hand path, clear the arms, and reestablish open facing position on 7-8.
  • Counts 1-8: Open break to closed position; compress lightly away on 1, redirect inward, and close the frame by 5-8.
  • Counts 1-8: Small supported side dip and recover; settle the dip on 5-7 only if both partners are ready, then return upright on 8.

Music to try

Use a medium-slow modern or sensual bachata track with clear 1-4-5-8 phrasing and enough space for controlled body movement.

Teaching notes

  • Finish each rotation before starting the next lead.
  • Keep wrapped hands low and close enough to avoid twisting the follow's shoulder.
  • Lead body movement as an invitation through frame, not by pushing the torso or neck.
  • Ask or pre-agree before using the dip, and keep the follow's axis recoverable.

Common mistakes

  • Rushing the hammerlock before the follow has completed the right turn.
  • Raising the wrapped arm behind the follow's back and straining the shoulder.
  • Forcing the body wave with hand pressure instead of timing and frame.
  • Dropping into the dip without consent, shared balance, or a clear recovery count.

Full write-up

This advanced bachata partnerwork sequence is designed for dancers who already control timing, frame, hand changes, and close-to-open transitions without forcing the partnership. It begins in open position with a measured basic so both partners settle the shared pulse before the lead sends the follow through a right turn into hammerlock. From there, the retained two-hand connection allows the lead to unwind the follow into shadow position, where both dancers travel in the same direction and keep the shoulders parallel enough for the next body-action lead to be readable.

The central phrase is a restrained shadow body wave or body roll, led through frame and timing rather than by pushing the follow's spine or neck. The follow keeps independent balance, and the lead gives space for the torso action to pass through the body before redirecting the partnership back to open position. A left-turn exit then clears the arms and prepares a closed-position ending. The final supported dip is small, shared, and optional; it is not a drop, a neck pull, or a surprise accent. Consent, axis protection, and the follow's ability to decline or stay upright are non-negotiable safety conditions, not matters of style.

Musically, the routine fits two full eight-count phrases plus a resolved ending. It works best when the dancers hear the tap accents on 4 and 8, using them to finish rotations before beginning the next lead. The sequence remains social when each figure is led early, the hands stay low during wraps, and body movement is offered as an invitation rather than imposed as choreography.
