Sequence
- Closed-position side basic prep: counts 1-8 in compact frame, lead's right hand on the follow's upper back and lead's left to follow's right; finish grounded after the tap on 8.
- Open-break to two-hand hold: counts 1-4 continue the side basic, then 5-8 open the frame and catch lead's right to follow's left while preserving lead's left to follow's right.
- Follow right turn to shadow wrap: counts 1-4 lead raises lead's left/follow's right for a clockwise underarm turn; 5-8 lower both hands into shadow, with lead offset behind and both facing the same direction.
- Shadow body wave and unwind: counts 1-4 mark a small chest-to-hip body wave in shadow; 5-8 release the wrap and guide the follow's left unwind to face, ending in right-to-right handshake.
- Handshake hammerlock check: counts 1-4 from right-to-right, guide a follow half left turn into a soft hammerlock; 5-8 check and unwind to face, keeping the elbow below shoulder height.
- Collect to closed frame for head-roll option: counts 1-4 draw the follow forward from the hammerlock exit into closed/sensual frame; 5-8 offer only torso timing for an optional head roll, with no hand pressure on the head or neck.
- Small side cambre and basic exit: counts 1-4 settle into a shallow lateral cambre with the follow's feet active; 5-8 recover upright first, then step back into a basic hold.
Music to try
Use a slower or medium-tempo bachata with clear 8-count phrases, audible breaks, and enough melodic space for suspended torso actions.
Teaching notes
- Catch the count before the first turn; the shadow wrap should arrive by 8, not after it.
- Lead torso actions through frame and shared timing, not by pulling the arms.
- Keep head-roll and cambre range optional; consent and neck-axis control are non-negotiable.
- Use smaller steps in shadow so the follow can feel the exit pathway.
Common mistakes
- Over-rotating the right turn so the shadow wrap lands late or off balance.
- Letting the lead's hand climb onto the follow's head or neck during the head-roll option.
- Forcing the hammerlock behind the follow's back instead of keeping the shoulder and elbow comfortable.
- Dropping into a deep backbend instead of creating a shallow lateral cambre with recovery first.
Full write-up
Bachata Sensual: Advanced Partnerwork Sequence is a compact social routine for advanced bachata-sensual dancers who already control close frame, turns, torso waves, and supported recoveries. The routine begins in closed position, using a small side basic to settle timing and frame. On the next phrase the pair opens to a two-hand hold, so the lead can send a follow right turn without changing distance abruptly. The turn wraps into shadow with the lead slightly offset behind the follow; from there, a contained torso wave can be marked across 1-4 and resolved by the tap before both dancers travel out. The unwrap gives a right-to-right connection suitable for a hammerlock check, after which the lead collects the follow back into closed frame for the head-roll option. The final side cambre is small and lateral, then recovers directly to basic. Counts should remain readable: weight changes sit on 1-3 and 5-7, with taps or held suspensions on 4 and 8, even when the torso action suspends the step. The advanced level comes from the stacked transitions, frame management, and shared timing, not from forcing large range. Neck and axis safety is non-negotiable: the follow keeps control of the head and spine, and the lead may only offer a clear frame, preparation, and space. Any head roll or cambre is omitted when either partner has not agreed to it or cannot maintain balance. In role-fluid or switch-friendly rooms, the same mechanics apply: the dancer leading manages timing and pathway, while the dancer following chooses personal range and keeps an active base.
