"La Clave" is a seventeen minute dance performance co-commissioned by the American Dance Festival and Cary, NC. ADF support provided by The Mary Duke Biddle Foundation. Performed as part of the "Made in NC" Show in the 2025 Season. This dance show portraits the story of the most important African rhythm in Latin music, called "La Clave", and how it evolved into the high energy music and dance known around the world as Mambo. This choreography was performed at Mambo Dinamico's 9th Annual Showcase on December 14th 2019 at Barriskill Dance Theater in Durham, NC. Choreographed by Betto Herrera, this show includes a few elements from Afro-Cuban Folkloric dances like, Palo, Makuta, Yuka and some more popular dancers like Son, Changüí and Mambo. The song is a very popular and traditional Cuban song called "La Negra Tomasa". This version of this song was recorded by Calle Vapor, which has a great album with re-makes of popular Cuban Sons.
